Blu-Rays To BUY

Take Shelter – This film was utter brilliance, Michael Shannon’s acting in this film will blow you away, he gives an in-depth emotional performance that deserves some sort of recognition. I can see some people not liking this film as it isn’t filled with action and violence but if you enjoy an astonishing drama with phenomenal acting then this will be right up your ally.

Blu-Rays To AVOID

The Rum Diary –  I was unsure where to put this film as I would have given it around three stars which technically means you like it but I don’t think it is worth your $20 so I would recommend it but when the price goes down or just for a rental. It does take a long time to get going and by that time a majority of the audience would have drifted off but I still thought parts were pretty funny and warm-hearted.

The Human Centipede II: Full Sequence – Unless you like poor acting and extremely sexual violence then this isn’t for you, so in that case this film isn’t for anyone. It is boring and downright disgusting and anyone who enjoys this film is wrong in the head. Just don’t buy it, period.

All of these blu-rays will be released on Tuesday 14th February 2012. Which blu-ray/s will you be picking up this week? Feel free to tell me in the comments below. Thanks again for reading.

My Favourite YouTube Movie Reviewers

There hasn’t been that much interesting movie news today so I thought I would throw together a few of my favourite YouTube movie reviewers that you should definitely subscribe to if you haven’t already.

First up, one of my favourite movie reviewers who doesn’t just do reviews he also throws news into the mix. He is there to make each video as funny as possible, of course it is Peter Rallis hosting his brilliant movie show Movie Buzz. If you have never seen a Peter Rallis video before there is one below for you to check out and I highly recommend it not even his humour can beat the way he says War Horse (1:33 in the video below.) You may not necessarily agree with all his views on films but if you are interested in films I definitely recommend you to give his videos a watch.

The next YouTuber that I highly recommend is the SchmoesKnow they make a great pair and are their chemistry between them is brilliant and I prefer hearing two different views on one film. Their reviews are thorough with some comedic elements and you can really tell that a lot of work and time goes into making their videos; they are so dedicated to their reviewing career that last year they created now one of my favourite awards ceremonies the YouReviewers Awards which I can’t wait for. You can check out one of their videos below and I definitely recommend you subscribe as their reviews are great and I very rarely disagree with anything they say, plus they have an awesome collection of t-shirts.

Now to probably my favourite YouTuber that just does review, ChrisStuckamann, he is hands down the best lone movies reviewer on YouTube; I feel as though his videos are very simple but thats all they need to be as what a review is just your opinion and thats what he does so well. He actually inspired me to start this movie blog so if he is reading this (highly unlikely) then I would like to just thank you. This year he also did a phenomenal montage his best films of the year and I defiantly recommend you check out that video below and also subscribe to his channel as his reviews are great.

Blu-Rays To BUY

Friends With Benefits – I know what you are thinking, “this is just No Strings Attached with different actors,” well you are kind of right but it is a lot better than No Strings Attached. Friends With Benefits is funnier, smarter, hotter and better acted; if you are a girl you will love this films and if you are a guy so will you this is the perfect film for a couple to watch and that they will both enjoy. I’m a guy and I loved this film, the chemistry between Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis is perfect and way better than that of Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher’s. I would recommend that you check this out as it is a guaranteed great night in.

Midnight In Paris – Now this film for some absurd reason isn’t released on blu-ray this week and is only released on DVD but I thought I would include it anyway as if you are desperate to see it you should buy it on DVD. This movie is absolutely brilliant, its smart, beautiful and funny; this is one of my favourite movies of 2011, I loved every second of this film. The acting from Owen Wilson, Tom Hiddleston, Marion Cotillard and Kurt Fuller is astonishing in this movie they supply a mixture of humour and drama. I am really gutted that this film hasn’t been nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards but just because it hasn’t received the recognition it deserves doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy it; the only reason for not purchasing this is because you are waiting for the blu-ray.

Blu-Rays To AVOID

One Day – This was not the best film of 2011, to be honest it was pretty poor. This is an adaptation of the best-selling book with the same title, that book which was loved by critics and the public became this film which was hated by critics and the public. If you have a huge soft spot for romance movies then you might like this and that is of course if you can get past Anne Hathaway’s diabolical Essex accent. I’m not sure if the brains behind this movie thought lets try and make the audience hate every character in this film, well they succeeded.

Blu-Ray’s To BUY

Drive – Well what can I say about this film? It was my second favourite film of 2011 so its obvious that I love this film. Not everyone who watches this film will love it; some will complain about the unnecessary violence and gore and others will just not get the grasp of it pure brilliance. This film stars Ryan Gosling and Albert Brooks both at their best and it is a shock to me that Drive didn’t get a best picture nomination at the Academy Awards. If you are not one for violence then I wouldn’t recommend this but if you enjoy good quality movies then this is one for you to pick up this week.

Blu-rays To AVOID

The Thing (2011) – This is the terrible 2011 prequel not the amazing original, this is a movie that if you loved the original you should not go anywhere near this piece of garbage. It is like the makers of this film knew it was going to be awful so they just completely overloaded the whole films with unnecessary GCI. Once you have watched this film it really isn’t hard to forget about it, it really doesn’t stick in your mind. I would probably watch this if it was on Netflix but would not rent of buy it.

In Time – This has to be one of my biggest disappointments of the year, this had the potential to be great, with Justin Timberlake and Cillian Murphy instead it was a massive flop. I hated this movie with a passion, the story could have been so amazing, the concept was great but they just executed it extremely poorly. The only time I would watch this movie again is if it is the only thing that is on the television. Please listen to me don’t waste you precious dollars on this pile of manure.

All of these blu-rays are released on 31st January 2012

‘Friends With Kids’ Review

Friends With Kids centres on group of 2 couples with kids and two best friends that decide to have a child together as they both haven’t met “the one”. Friends With Kids stars a lot of the same actors/actresses as Bridesmaids, starring: Kristin Wiig, Chris O’Dowd, Maya Rudolf and Josh Hamm. I really like Chris O’Dowd as I am a huge fan of The IT Crowd (A UK comedy which is defiantly worth checking out if you haven’t seen it yet) and I am really glad to see him in a lot more movies.

The acting in this film is exactly what you would expect from a rom com with the big names not taking the front role leaving the spotlight for Adam Scott an Jennifer Westfeldt. Kristin Wiig is brilliant in this as she always is, its just a shame she didn’t have a big role to play.

While watching this I couldn’t get past the feeling that it felt just like a sitcom which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This film has some laugh out loud moments but when it comes to drama moments I feel as though it is seriously lacking, I would have much preferred it if they stuck to comedy.

Jennifer Westfeldt did a much better job of directing, writing and producing than starring in it. She could have easily cut off at least 15 minutes of the film as when it hits the one hour, twenty minutes it starts to get a bit tiring and boring as you sit there waiting for the inevitable ending.

This movie will probably be loved by millions of women and it does what it was made to do by supplying a few laughs intertwined with a love story. This films biggest flaw is that it is just too long and begins to lag quite badly towards the end and it leaves you wishing it would just hurry up and get to the ending. I would say this is a DVD rental buy not a cinema experience; if you get dragged to it by your girlfriend don’t worry you will still get a few laughs out of it.

Friends With Kids hits cinemas 9th March (USA) with no UK release date.

6/10
