‘Red Tails’ – Movie Review

Red Tails is the latest movie from the childhood destroyer George Lucas. It centres on a group of African American pilots in a training program who are faced by segregation who are grounded during World War Two but are finally called into duty where they need to prove themselves while rising their lives for a country that didn’t appreciate them. Right off the bat let me tell you that I was so excited for this movie, from the trailer it looked like George Lucas could actually redeem himself after ruining the Star Wars franchise. But I was so wrong, this film was absolutely diabolical.

The biggest flaw of the movie has to be the shoddy excuse of a script, written by John Ridley and Aaeon McGruder, both pretty unknown screenplay writers but that doesn’t always mean it will be bad, but in this case it really is. This script is just a massive ball of cheese, every word that comes out of the characters mouth just makes you curl up and cringe. Then again what did you expect from the same producing team as the Star Wars prequels, making this movie feel as though it was written by George Lucas himself.

The poor script makes for some characters that you just don’t care about, when you are watching all these impressive dog fights you couldn’t really care if they made it back or plummeted towards the ground, I know that sounds heartless but you really don’t care. The characters just have no depth or back story causing you to not care about them one little bit.

One positive thing in Red Tails is the amazing special effects that attempt to keep you entertained between the dreadful scenes where speech is exchanged. The only good scenes in this movie are scenes that take place in the air, yes they still have the occasional clichéd speech but the astonishing visual effects make up for that at times. I think I would have preferred this movie a lot more if they cut out of all the speech and it was just two hours of continuous dog fights.

All round the performances are pretty mediocre but the one actor that stood out was the always brilliant Terrance Howard. He has to be the only character that you slightly care about, but unfortunalty his good performance doesn’t make up for the script that basically ruins the whole movie. Even if this movie had great performances they wouldn’t have stopped the rest of the many failings.

All in all I really didn’t enjoy this movie, from the trailer it had so much promise, it looked like another feel good race movie but boy was I wrong. The gorgeous special effects couldn’t make up for the one dimensional characters that spurt out a spew of cheesy lines that no one in their right mind would think of saying aloud. Please avoid at all cost, it’s poor, very poor.

Prometheus – Movie Review

I have been looking forward to this movie for so long. When I first heard Ridley Scott was planning on making a prequel to Alien I decided it was about time for me to watch it and unsurprisingly it blew my mind, after that I was desperate to see this movie. After viewing the first teaser trailer for Prometheus I was so impressed and I was anticipating it even more, now if you think they showed us too much in the trailer and gave away most of the plot, that’s because they did.

Prometheus centres on a group of explorers that travel to a distant planet in an attempt to find who created the human race. While there they manages to cause disturbances that put the fait of the human race out of their hands and it is their job to stop the race from falling.

Your first impressions of this movie will be how utterly beautiful it is, from the Scottish highlands to the inside of Prometheus this movie never fails to look stunning in every frame. The visuals of this movie causes it to become so immersive which really helps bring you into the universe. It’s just a shame that the look of this film couldn’t help you from ignoring all its other failings.

When talking about the acting in this movie it is a very mixed bag. Let’s start with the phenomenal, as always, Michael Fassbender, he absolutely carries this film; his portrayal of android David is Oscar worthy. It’s a great shame the same can’t be said about the rest of the cast, Noomi Rapace along with others are just remotely average but the worse acting in the film came from British actor Rafe Spall. I watched Pete Versus Life (Channel 4 sitcom starring Spall) and automatically noticed that Spall was a horrendous actor, he was bad in a comedic role but was even worse in Prometheus. Not only was his performance laughable it was just down right cringing, it didn’t help that the script created for that character was just silly.

The crew of Prometheus is far greater than that of Alien and that is possibly it’s biggest failing. Prometheus has a total crew of seventeen people, if you think that sounds too many, thats because it is. You don’t get involved with the characters and really don’t care about them when they start dropping like flies. Even with the characters that got the most screen time and the most development it still wasn’t enough for me to remotely care when fatality struck. All the characters in the movie were so one dimensional with extremely poor development.

Now I know there have been a lot of unfair comparisons to Alien but this is a prequel to the greatest sci-fi horror of all time and making a prequel that lives up to the original is a near impossible challenge, unfortunately Scott doesn’t manage to do it. Alien was so groundbreaking at the time of its release so it is kind of unfair to compare the two but it needs to be done. The thing that made Alien so amazing was how simple it was, mixed with the long nervous silent scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat through the whole movie, unfortunately Prometheus had absolutely none of these. This movie wasn’t scary at all there were no suspenseful scenes keeping me on the edge of my seat. I feel as though Scott attempted to take on way to much which caused the movie to become very muddled with it not knowing what story it was trying to tell.

I know it sounds like I am bashing on the movie but I did actually like it, yes I was hugely disappointed but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. I would recommend this to any fans of Alien just so they can give their own opinion on it, I know people who love it and people who hate it and I’m in the middle. Prometheus is predictable, messy and not the prequel I wanted but it my be the one you did.

Buy A Blu-Ray A Week – USA

Blu-rays To BUY

Game Of Thrones Season 1 – I never actually watched Game Of Thrones, yes I know I have been told many a time that I am missing out. But don’t worry I will be picking this up soon and then I will be able to experience that critically acclaimed series. From what I have heard I would definitely recommend this to a lot of people but I can really judge until I actually give it a watch. I think that you should pick this up just because of all the buzz and acclaim that has surrounded it.

The Skin I Live In – I’m not usually one for foreign movies but this one blew me away. After watching The Skin I Live In I don’t see how it didn’t win let alone get a nomination. I agree with what many critics are saying that this is a Spanish Hitchcock movie. This is a great dark twisted drama thriller that delivers a new modern take on the classic Frankenstein story. I seriously love this movie and I would recommend to all of you but if you don’t like reading subtitles then you may not want to check this one out.

Like Crazy – I very recently watched Like Crazy as it had been recommended to me by many different people and I actually really enjoyed it. This is one of Felicity Jones’ greatest performances along along with her partner Anton Yelchin who pleasantly surprised me. If you aren’t into romantic dramas then this definitely won’t be one for you but to anyone that does I seriously recommend this to you, and I can guarantee that you will love it.

Footloose – I was seriously uninterested by this movie, I had no intention whatsoever to check it out, so I didn’t. However I have heard some really good things but also some really bad things so I’m really unsure whether to recommend this to you or not. It has received a quite impressive 70% on RottenTomatoes so i could be worth your time. If you are into these sorts of movies then this one might be for you but I’m still not interested but you maybe.

Blu-rays To AVOID

Immortals –  I really really hated this movie, I wasn’t interested from any of the poster or trailers. While watching Immortals all I thought about was how much this film is trying to mimic 300, yes it has the same producers but it doesn’t mean you have to try and recreate the exact same film. To be fair to this film, it does look pretty nice, and has surprisingly great looks for such a dreadful film. It seems as though film makers can never get these sort of films right and I don’t want to see hundreds of more attempts until they make a good one. I really wouldn’t recommend this film to anyone as I hated it so much, but its your call.

Jack And Jill – Of course I wasn’t going to recommend this steaming pile of shit. There isn’t really much I can say about this movie, most of you know how seriously poor it is and that is why you shouldn’t go anywhere near this movie. EVER!

All of the above Bly-rays are released Tuesday 6th March 2012 in the USA. So what blu-ray will you be picking up this week? If any? Feel free to tell me your thoughts in the comments below. ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ Teaser Trailer

A teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming Seth Rogen written movie Neighbourhood Watch. It centres on a group of suburban dads that form a neighbourhood watch group in order to get some free time away from their families, which leads them to discover a plan to destroy the earth. Neighbourhood Watch stars Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Vince Vaughn and Richard Ayoade, they are all extremely funny guys and I can’t wait to see them take on their roles. The premise of this film seems pretty poor but I am just going to watch it just to see Richard Ayoade because I love him. Neighbourhood Watch hits theatres on 27th July (USA) and 22nd August (UK) and you can check out the teaser trailer below.

‘That’s My Boy’ Red-Band Trailer

A new trailer for the upcoming Adam Sandler film, That’s My Boy has been released online. That’s My Boy focusses on a father and son, when the father moves in with his some and his soon to be wife just before their wedding and as you can tell things don’t go smoothly. That’s My Boy stars Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, James Caan, Milo Ventimiglla and Susan Sarandon. I am really not looking forward to this movie, from the trailer it looks like yet another seriously poor Adam Sandler movie that everyone will go and see but somehow people will still like it. If you want to you can check out That’s My Boy in theatres on 15th June (USA) and 7th September (UK) and for once I don’t care about the long gap in the release dates because I do not care about this film one bit. You can check out the trailer below.

Yes, it really does look that shit. What do you think? Feel free to tell me your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks again for reading and if you enjoyed this post please hit that like and follow button to show me some love.

Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’ Trailer!

The teaser trailer for Tim Burton’s upcoming black and white children’s animated movie Frankenweenie has been released online. Frankenweenie centres on Victor who conducts a science experiment in order to bring his dog back from the dead, only to face extreme consequences. Frankenweenie stars the voices of Winona Ryder, Martin Short and Catherine O’Hara. I think this film looks good and will be good because it’s Tim Burton but I’m really unsure about how much this film will appeal to kids seeing as it is in black and white; but it looks like we will have to wait and see. You can see Frankenweenie in theatres on October 5th 2012 (UK+USA) and you can check out the trailer below.

What do you think? Do you think this could grab the attention of children? Feel free to tell me in the comments below. Thanks again for reading and if you enjoyed this post please feel free to hit that like and follow button to show me some love.

New Avengers Trailer!

A new trailer has been released online of Joss Whedon’s upcoming superhero movie, The Avengers. The Avengers plot goes something like this, Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D. bring together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki & his various membered army (Courtesy of IMDB). The Avengers sees Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders and Scarlett Johansson coming together to fight the evil force Loki played by Tom Hiddleston. The Avengers hits theatres on 27th April (UK) and 4th May (USA) and you can check out the new trailer below.

Looks so awesome right? I’m just afraid that they might be showing us a little bit too much, but we will have to wait and see. What do you think?
