Is There Such Thing As A ‘Greatest Movie Of All Time’?

Citizen Kane? The Shawshank Redemption? The Godfather? Star Wars? Which one of these great movies is the ‘greatest movie of all time’? Well the correct answer is none of them, I don’t believe there is such thing as a ‘greatest movie of all time.’ Yes you can have a favourite movie of all time but does that make it the greatest? It is impossible for people to agree on what is the ‘greatest movie of all time,’ it’s so hard to choose one because their isn’t one.

One of my favourite movies of all time is The Dark Knight, there are many things that make this one of my favourites movie. This is the movie I watch at home on rainy days, on Christmas, when I’m ill or when I just need cheering up, this movie means everything to me, that is what a favourite movie should be like. Now I know most of you out there won’t agree with me, we all have our personal favourites, a lot of peoples favourites might be absolutely terrible in my eyes but to them it is everything they want out of a movie and that is all you can ask.

Movies really shouldn’t be given the title of the ‘greatest movie of all time’ because it adds a lot of pressure to first time viewers of that film. Not too long ago I watched Citizen Kane for the first time and all I could think throughout the movie was that I have to like it, this is supposedly one of the greatest movies of all time, unsurprisingly this ruined my enjoyment of the movie. I like to go into every movie with a wide open opinion but I already had the perception that I was going to watch the ‘greatest movie of all time.’ You know what, going in with that expectation the film fell short of what I was expecting leaving me to feel underwhelmed. There shouldn’t be any pressure for audiences to think that a certain movie is the ‘greatest movie of all time,’ people have their own opinions and they can think what they want about movies.

There are only a few movies that I watch for the first time and think to myself, this is one of my favourites, when I first watched The Dark Knight in the theatres I loved it, but it wasn’t until I watched it at home five months later that I realised just how much I loved it and the more I watched the more I fell in love with it. I feel as though in this modern day of remakes and sequels there are only a few directors that I know could make my next favourite film.

In IMDb’s top 250 of all time they place The Shawshank Redemption at the top, this doesn’t make it the ‘greatest movie of all time,’ the list is controlled by the publics ratings, it just means that The Shawshank Redemption is the most popular peoples favourite. I can tell if a movie is very well made but that doesn’t mean I will enjoy it. One example being Schindler’s List, I can tell that it is a beautifully made movie with astonishing acting but for some reason I just didn’t enjoy it. I just feel that people should have their own favourites no matter on the quality of the movie, whether it be White Chicks or American Psycho people are free to like what they want to and they shouldn’t be forced to like what are considered the ‘greatest movies of all time.’

The movies should be an experience and not a competition.

I would love to hear what some of your favourites are in the comments below. I will be producing a list of some of my favourites (in no particular order) soon so look out for that. If you enjoyed this post please feel free to like and follow my blog. Thanks for reading.

Prometheus – Movie Review

I have been looking forward to this movie for so long. When I first heard Ridley Scott was planning on making a prequel to Alien I decided it was about time for me to watch it and unsurprisingly it blew my mind, after that I was desperate to see this movie. After viewing the first teaser trailer for Prometheus I was so impressed and I was anticipating it even more, now if you think they showed us too much in the trailer and gave away most of the plot, that’s because they did.

Prometheus centres on a group of explorers that travel to a distant planet in an attempt to find who created the human race. While there they manages to cause disturbances that put the fait of the human race out of their hands and it is their job to stop the race from falling.

Your first impressions of this movie will be how utterly beautiful it is, from the Scottish highlands to the inside of Prometheus this movie never fails to look stunning in every frame. The visuals of this movie causes it to become so immersive which really helps bring you into the universe. It’s just a shame that the look of this film couldn’t help you from ignoring all its other failings.

When talking about the acting in this movie it is a very mixed bag. Let’s start with the phenomenal, as always, Michael Fassbender, he absolutely carries this film; his portrayal of android David is Oscar worthy. It’s a great shame the same can’t be said about the rest of the cast, Noomi Rapace along with others are just remotely average but the worse acting in the film came from British actor Rafe Spall. I watched Pete Versus Life (Channel 4 sitcom starring Spall) and automatically noticed that Spall was a horrendous actor, he was bad in a comedic role but was even worse in Prometheus. Not only was his performance laughable it was just down right cringing, it didn’t help that the script created for that character was just silly.

The crew of Prometheus is far greater than that of Alien and that is possibly it’s biggest failing. Prometheus has a total crew of seventeen people, if you think that sounds too many, thats because it is. You don’t get involved with the characters and really don’t care about them when they start dropping like flies. Even with the characters that got the most screen time and the most development it still wasn’t enough for me to remotely care when fatality struck. All the characters in the movie were so one dimensional with extremely poor development.

Now I know there have been a lot of unfair comparisons to Alien but this is a prequel to the greatest sci-fi horror of all time and making a prequel that lives up to the original is a near impossible challenge, unfortunately Scott doesn’t manage to do it. Alien was so groundbreaking at the time of its release so it is kind of unfair to compare the two but it needs to be done. The thing that made Alien so amazing was how simple it was, mixed with the long nervous silent scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat through the whole movie, unfortunately Prometheus had absolutely none of these. This movie wasn’t scary at all there were no suspenseful scenes keeping me on the edge of my seat. I feel as though Scott attempted to take on way to much which caused the movie to become very muddled with it not knowing what story it was trying to tell.

I know it sounds like I am bashing on the movie but I did actually like it, yes I was hugely disappointed but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. I would recommend this to any fans of Alien just so they can give their own opinion on it, I know people who love it and people who hate it and I’m in the middle. Prometheus is predictable, messy and not the prequel I wanted but it my be the one you did.

4 Clips From ‘American Reunion’

4 clips have been released online today for the upcoming American Pie movie, American Reunion. This is a sequel to American Wedding (the third one)American Reunion features the original cast as they reunite together for their hugh school reunion. American Reunion stars everyone from the original, Jason Biggs as Jim, Alyson Hannigan as Michelle, Seann William Scott as Stifler, Tara Reid as Vicky and Mena Suvari as Heather. I do enjoy the old American Pie movies but I do find Stifler extremely annoying and at times that does spoil my enjoyment. You can see American Reunion in theatres on 6th April (USA) and 2nd May (UK) and you can check out the four clips below.

These clips are pretty average and I hope the film will be better but we will just have to wait and see. What do you think? Are you looking forward to it? Feel free to tell me your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks for reading.

Why So Many Sequels And Remakes?

This is a little rant that is little overdue. Why Hollywood do you feel the need to constantly spew out remakes and sequels till your heart contents? I know that remakes and sequels have been done for years but recently it has felt as though we have been completely overwhelmed by this overload of sequels and remakes. Now that Oscar season is long gone we should expect to see lots more of these pieces of garbage that will mount up a monstrous pile of cash.

Hollywood are making these sequels and remakes for one simple reason, they make lots and lots of money. It seems as though Hollywood have given up on making great films and all their focus is on how much money they will make. Three films last year became part of the ten highest grossing movies of all time, all three of those movies were sequels. Fair enough the highest of the three was Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 which is a book adaptation and is the final in a long line of films so I don’t have anything against that movie. The other two I do have problems with, first off Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the fourth instalment in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. This is one of those franchises that released another movie just for the simple fact of scrapping in as much money as possible; in the third Pirates Of The Caribbean film it came to a climactic end of what everyone thought was the trilogy. But because two out of the three Pirates Of The Caribbean films made the top 50 highest grossing movies of all time, Hollywood thought it would be a great idea to release a fourth film into a franchise that everyone thought was over. Finally Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, which is the third in the franchise of Transformers movies. Everyone knows that these films are extremely poor and are just made to make money and give viewing pleasure to people who like explosions. I understand that the third was going to be the last film that Michael Bay was going to direct, but wait, what is it now? Michael Bay is returning to direct a FOURTH Transformers movie. Why? Three were bad enough we don’t need even more.

I wouldn’t mind all these sequels and remakes if they were actually decent, for example this year The Dark Knight Rises is being released which is a sequel to the last Christopher Nolan Batman movie. Everyone knows that this film will be great and this is a sequel that people want to see. Admittedly some sequels are necessary, for example, Lord Of The Rings, they were all adapted from a book and they stuck to the amount of the books and didn’t add anymore unnecessary movies, they are also amazing films and people actually wanted the sequels, but what seems to be the case these days is that the people don’t want any of these sequels and remakes.

Remakes on the other hand I very rarely find a good one, the most recent remake I can think of is Straw Dogs which was a completely needless and painful remake that never should have been funded. There has been some shocking news recently that Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion is planning to get remade, now tell me why would anyone want to do that? This film is a classic for a reason, it is made by one of the greatest directors of all time and a film like that should be cherished as classic movie making and not be remade because stupid people don’t like old films and want to watch it in colour. There are some films that should NEVER EVER be remade and this is one of them.

If you think that we have seen too many sequels and remakes we have much more to come this year and the years to come. Recently they have decided they are going to do EVEN more Fast And Furious films, I maybe a bit bias when it comes to this franchise seeing I hate all the films. Anyway I feel as though they have made way to many of these films and really need to move on and make something else. They have decided that they want to do up to seven Fast And Furious film, why? They are all the same, just more films with needless violence and no depth of character or storyline.

I think the problem is though is that the big Hollywood companies can’t think of any new ideas, a lot of the best films last year came from independent companies that have creative and brilliant minds behind their films and thats exactly what Hollywood don’t have. I can just see Hollywood completely overstepping the mark and deciding to remake such a classic cult movie like Taxi Driver which would be an absolutely absurd idea and if anyone ever decides that they will remake it they deserve to be shot. Below is my list of films/franchises that should NEVER EVER be remade or get sequels.

Please No Remakes

Harry Potter – I along with many other people absolutely love this franchise and if I ever saw it get remade I would not be a happy person. This is one of those franchises that would not be the same and would be no where near as good. The only problem with the Harry Potter series is the acting but that isn’t a good enough reason for Hollywood to think it should be remade. I was young when Harry Potter was first released and I have grown up with these films and they have become my childhood and if that were to get remade in twenty odd years it would leave me feeling a bit pissed off, so please don’t even think of a remake.

Back To The Future – Even though I wasn’t brought up in the 80’s I still grew up with these films, since Iwas really young me and my dad watched these films all the time and it was these films that made me fall in love with movies and if they were to remake this trilogy just like the Harry Potter franchise I would not be happy one bit. It would also be an extremely big struggle to remake this film as we are  living in the future that this film is set in, so I hope on that basis Hollywood think it can’t be remade and should never even think about it.

Taxi Driver – I only recently saw Taxi Driver for the first time a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it which is surprising seeing I wasn’t brought up around the time the film was released or set and I struggle to see how people would love this film if it was released now. I also couldn’t imagine this movie being directed by anyone that isn’t Martin Scorsese, or starring anyone who isn’t Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster. I know Hollywood aren’t even stupid enough to remake this cult classic.

Fight Club – Another cult classic on my list that shouldn’t be touched under any circumstances. Fight Club is such a 90’s movie that wouldn’t really fit or make sense in any other generation, hopefully that will be enough to keep Hollywood away. With Fight Club being one of mine along with many others favourite film of all time it would be a huge disappointment if this one got remade, along with the rest of the films on this list, the remake could not surpass the original let alone live up to it.

Psycho – This is the greatest horror movies of all time, I’m not a huge horror fan, I hate most of them but this is one of, if not the best I have ever seen and it is another one of Hitchcock’s classics that should most certainly not be remade. This is a classic black and white horror that when remade wouldn’t seem at all scary in the modern day but it’s the fact that it’s a classic that makes this one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever.

I just hope that Hollywood think that all these films are such classics that they would never ever think of remaking them.

I would just like to say I’m sorry for my absence for the last few days I have been seriously preoccupied with work that I got behind on but don’t worry I’m back. Thank you for reading this post and I hope you agree with the excess of these sequels but you can tell me your thoughts in the comments below. ‘Despicable Me 2’ Teaser Trailer Is Here

The trailer for the upcoming Dreamwork sequel Despicable Me 2 has been released today. Despicable Me 2 doesn’t currently have any plot released to the public. We do see some familiar voices returning in this movie, Steve Carrell, Al Pacino, Steve Carell and Miranda Cosgrove. I quite liked this first Despicable Me I thought it was a good little animated movie but I fear that this maybe milking the franchise a little as I felt it didn’t really need a sequel. Despicable Me 2 hits theatres on 28th June (UK) and 3rd July (USA) and you can check out the teaser trailer below.

What did you think of the original? Are you looking forward to the sequel? Feel free to tell me in the comments below. Thanks for reading and if you enjoyed this post please feel free to hit that like and follow button to show me some love.

‘Muppets’ Sequel

It has been announced today that plans are going forward to make a sequel to recent 2011 film The Muppets. For people who are big fans of The Muppets this is great news, especially seeing as they did such a great job with the first one. It is unsure whether Jason Segel is returning to write or star but I really hope he returns as I thought he did a brilliant job bringing the series back to life.

I think this is great news but what do you think? Feel free to tell me all your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks for reading.

‘Prometheus’ Does TED Talks!

Today the viral marketing campaign for Ridley Scott’s upcoming movie Prometheus. A TED talk has been released with Guy Pearce talking about stuff but it is awesome. Prometheus centres on a group of explorers who are driven to a planet by a clue on how the human race was formed but it ends up with the human race being in extreme danger. Prometheus stars Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Repace and Idris Elba. I can’t wait for this film, there is a lot of doubt surrounding whether this film is a prequel or sequel to Alien, Ridley Scott said that it is just set in the same universe. Prometheus hits theatres on 1st June (UK) and 8th June (USA) an you can check out the promo video below.

What do you think? Awesome right? Feel free to tell me your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks again for reading and if you enjoyed this post please feel free to hit the like and follow button to show me some love.
