Higher Frame Rates Are The Future!

I have just come out of seeing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 48FPS. Firstly I saw the movie in 24 just incase I didn’t like the higher frame rate but it turns out, I absolutely loved it. I can’t quite fathom exactly how and why the higher frame rate causes people to feel nauseated. I know everyone is different but I can confidently say that one day this will be the norm and every film will be released in 48FPS instead of the stale and dated 24FPS.

For those who don’t know, let me explain exactly what it is meant by 48FPS. A film is made up of images, hence the name moving picture, usually 24 different images are shown within one second, therefor creating the illusion that it’s moving. However, when it comes to 48FPS we are shown double the amount of images in a second, this is said to increase the reality and clarity of the films that we are watching. A lot of modern TVs have an option which you can select called Motion Plus, this makes everything on your TV look as though you are watching it in 48FPS. Below you can see two different GIFs, the top one is the typical 24FPS and the one below is the newly introduced 48FPS (wait for the GIFs to fully load before judging).

48FPS

They aren’t the best representation of what double the amount of frame rate is like but they give you a rough idea. Many people say that the second looks like a “soap opera,” I personally don’t see that, I think that it adds a lot more realism. When it comes to The Hobbit people thought that the 48FPS took you out of the experience and even made some people nauseas. I personally thought it added a huge amount to the experience, it made the film look a lot realistic and gave the film such a real life feel, and I loved it.

A higher frame rate is meant to make the video appear smoother, this is because you are seeing more images per second. Where the higher frame rate really shines is when the camera is panning, in The Hobbit when the camera pans along the snowy mountains you cannot say that you don’t prefer it to the 24FPS, the higher frame rate just looks perfect. Many people think that the higher frame rate should only be used on documentaries because it makes landscapes look exceptionally beautiful, the majority feel that the higher frame rate doesn’t look right when people are involved, they feel as though it looks “sped up” I personally don’t feel this way.

I don’t know if any of you remember the re-launch/introduction of 3D into the cinema, people really weren’t convinced and said that it was just a gimmick (I personally still think that studios slap it on some films just for a crash grab). When Avatar came along people were blown away by the impact 3D could have on the movie going experience, Avatar changed the movie industry forever and I think it will again. James Cameron will be filming the Avatar sequels in 60FPS and I think that when they are released it will make people realise that higher frame rates are definitely the way forward.

By nature humans don’t like change, and that is exactly what this is, we have had 24FPS since the birth of film, and many people feel that there isn’t a reason to change. I remember when everyone first got timeline on Facebook, everyone was complaining about how bad it is and how much they hated it, but now, no one cares because it has become the norm, the same thing will happen with higher frame rates. I’m glad that more and more directors are going to start directing their movies in higher frame rates, once they start pushing it then the more likely the general public are to lap it up like they did 3D.

When it comes down to it whether you like higher frame rates or not, it is all down to personal preference. It’s like 3D as a lot of people just don’t like to watch stuff in 3D and it will be similar with higher frame rates for the next few years until eventually they will become standard for all movies, along with ultra high definition and 3D. Once a few more films are out in higher frame rate more people will begin to like it, then there will become a point where people will only watch movies in a higher frame rate as the quality of 24FPS just doesn’t compare, and I hope that day is soon.

Have you seen The Hobbit yet? If so, what was your opinion of the higher frame rate? Do you think it will catch on? I would love to hear your thoughts below. Thanks for reading.

Changes To My Blog!

Recently many of you may have noticed that my posts have become less regular, this isn’t because I am losing interest, I love doing this and if I could I would do it all the time but unfortunately I have other commitments in my life. Therefore I have decided to stop posting news updates on this blog and just do reviews on TV shows and films with the occasional rant and list popping up. I will still be covering HUGE news, for example if there was a new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises I would post it because that is too amazing to miss but if it is just a TV spot for American Reunion then I won’t be posting it. I’m sorry if this has caused any of you inconvenience but when my life starts to become less hectic then I will go back to including news but at the moment I have too much on my plate. I’m really sorry if this upsets any of you but I hope that you will stay just as loyal as you have been and continue to read my posts. You can look out for my Hunger Games and Walking Dead Season 2 reviews in the coming days. Thank you very much for being so loyal and supportive, I couldn’t do it without any of you.

4 Clips From ‘American Reunion’

4 clips have been released online today for the upcoming American Pie movie, American Reunion. This is a sequel to American Wedding (the third one)American Reunion features the original cast as they reunite together for their hugh school reunion. American Reunion stars everyone from the original, Jason Biggs as Jim, Alyson Hannigan as Michelle, Seann William Scott as Stifler, Tara Reid as Vicky and Mena Suvari as Heather. I do enjoy the old American Pie movies but I do find Stifler extremely annoying and at times that does spoil my enjoyment. You can see American Reunion in theatres on 6th April (USA) and 2nd May (UK) and you can check out the four clips below.

These clips are pretty average and I hope the film will be better but we will just have to wait and see. What do you think? Are you looking forward to it? Feel free to tell me your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks for reading.

‘We Bought A Zoo’ – Review

I heard about this film a very long time ago and have been awaiting its release for years and it has finally been released in the UK. We Bought A Zoo is actually based on a true story, when Hollywood say the word ‘based’ they usually use the term very loosely but here it is actually pretty truthful. This is the second film released in the last couple of months that is actually from where I live, the true story of this film comes from the life of Benjamin Mee, who lives in Dartmoor, Devon, England (which they have altered to California, America in the film) and six months after the death of his wife he decides to buy a zoo with his two children, the film follows his attempts to make the zoo a place where the local community can come and visit. Not only do I live near this zoo I have actually been there and I have also met Benjamin Mee, a couple of years ago he made a speech at my school and that was when I first heard of the movie and since then I have wanted to see it, finally I have.

We Bought A Zoo is adapted from the book written by Benjamin Mee, the script is written by Devil Wears Prada’s Aline Brosh Mckenna. The script is to her usual standard, not phenomenal but alright nothing special at all. The dialogue is quite well written it is intelligent, adorable and amazingly charming.

Working off Aline Brosh McKenna’s script Damon delivers his usual brilliant performance, taking the lead role of Benjamin Mee. Damon’s performance is one of things that really carries this movie, he supplies some of the most emotional moments with some help from his amazing supporting cast. This film really shows Damon’s skills as an actor, he can go from action hero Jason Bourne to kindhearted zoo owner Benjamin Mee. Damon isn’t the only one that shines, Thomas Haden Church takes on the role of Benjamin’s cynical brother, which has been altered from being his mother. Church supplies the humour in this warm-hearted moving film, I couldn’t help but feel while watching that his role was a little needless and he was just their to contradict everything Benjamin was doing. Another person who I thinks really shines is Maggie Elizabeth Jones who stars as Rosie Mee, Benjamin’s youngest child, she makes from some really adorable moments in the movie but it does feel that the film plays on her cuteness a bit to much to make the audience like this film. This film really does have some great cast members but lets be honest there is no way in hell that any of us could believe that Scarlett Johansson is a zookeeper.

We Bought A Zoo is by no means perfect but those imperfections shouldn’t stop you from loving it. One of the imperfections of this film is the structure, the first half an hour of this film is pretty poor, with extremely bad attempts at humour and an extremely painful performance from the estate agent. It isn’t until they move into the zoo and meet their new neighbours the film really picks up and becomes the lighthearted yet saddening movie it is.

I really did love We Bought A Zoo, all of it’s flaws seem to wilt away by the end of the movie and you begin to fall in love with it cuteness. Not everyone will love this movie, some may think it is cheesy but others will love it as I did. I thought this film was both cute and moving at the same time, there was one scene of an abrupt argument that nearly had me and many others in tears. We Bought A Zoo isn’t really a family movie, it’s family friendly but it isn’t just a cute animal movie that kids will love, the adults will end up enjoying it more than their children.

Kony 2012 – Spread The Word

I know this isn’t at all movie related and has nothing to do with the content on my blog but this video really made me think and I want you to help me, help them spread the word of Joseph Kony. By now most of you have probably seen or heard of the video if you haven’t it is down below for you to watch.

After watching the video what did you think? When I watched that it shook me and I found it incredibly thought provoking, it made me feel their pain and want to help fight for their freedom. I know no-one in the world agrees with what Kony is doing so please of heavens sake please spread the word of what he is doing so we can all fight together to make this world a better place.

I have a lot of respect for Jason Russell, a normal person who goes to work in Africa to help make the world a better place, if you believe in heaven then its obvious he is guaranteed to be in there. I along with many others are going to flood the streets on April 20th 2012 to put up posters over night to spread the word of what this horrible man is doing in Uganda.

Please help by sharing the video with all of your friends. There are so many ways you can do your bit to help; create an event on Facebook for your local city organising a mass gathering on April 20th where you plaster your city in posters of Joseph Kony. You can purchase posters, wristbands, t-shirts and stickers from their website.

Thank you for reading, please don’t forget to spread the word.
