New ‘Hobbit’ Still Online

A new still from the upcoming Peter Jackson prequel to Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been released online today. The Hobbit centres on ‘Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug’ (Courtesy of IMDB) We see some of the cast returning from The Lord Of The Rings such as; Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Sir Ian McKellan and the phenomenal Andy Serkis as Gollum. We also see some new actors in this film; Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Richard Armitage as Thorin and many more. I personally can not wait for this movie, I am so glad that Peter Jackson has come back to direct otherwise it just wouldn’t be the same; I reckon Martin Freeman will be brilliant and I can not wait to see him in the Shire. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set for a 14th December 2012 (UK+USA) release date and that date can’t come soon enough. You can check out the image below.

Buy A Blu-Ray A Week – USA

Blu-Ray’s To BUY

Drive – Well what can I say about this film? It was my second favourite film of 2011 so its obvious that I love this film. Not everyone who watches this film will love it; some will complain about the unnecessary violence and gore and others will just not get the grasp of it pure brilliance. This film stars Ryan Gosling and Albert Brooks both at their best and it is a shock to me that Drive didn’t get a best picture nomination at the Academy Awards. If you are not one for violence then I wouldn’t recommend this but if you enjoy good quality movies then this is one for you to pick up this week.

Blu-rays To AVOID

The Thing (2011) – This is the terrible 2011 prequel not the amazing original, this is a movie that if you loved the original you should not go anywhere near this piece of garbage. It is like the makers of this film knew it was going to be awful so they just completely overloaded the whole films with unnecessary GCI. Once you have watched this film it really isn’t hard to forget about it, it really doesn’t stick in your mind. I would probably watch this if it was on Netflix but would not rent of buy it.

In Time – This has to be one of my biggest disappointments of the year, this had the potential to be great, with Justin Timberlake and Cillian Murphy instead it was a massive flop. I hated this movie with a passion, the story could have been so amazing, the concept was great but they just executed it extremely poorly. The only time I would watch this movie again is if it is the only thing that is on the television. Please listen to me don’t waste you precious dollars on this pile of manure.

All of these blu-rays are released on 31st January 2012

Buy A Blu-Ray A Week – UK

This week there aren’t any blu-rays to avoid so I will just be listing blu-rays to buy this week.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – This is a fantastic film with phenomenal performances throughout from the brilliant Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy and so many more. The storyline of this film is a little complex and you could find your self getting a bit lost but its still not a complex as inception the first time round. The film is also quite slow, I think that you need to be quite interested in British spies to really appreciate the pure quality of this movie. But it really is a great shame that is one of many films that has been completely snubbed by the Academy Awards.

Crazy, Stupid, Love – I absolutely loved this movie and it was very close to making it into my top 11 movies of 2011 but it didn’t quite make it. Again another great film staring the sensational Ryan Gosling and he is joined by Steve Carell, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore. This is a hilarious rom-com that guys will love as well;  this is a great buy for anyone into comedies and I definitely recommend you picking this one up.

All of these blu-rays are released on Monday 30th January.

‘Arthur Christmas’ Movie Review

I know Christmas is over and this film was out a while ago but I have only just got round to watching so here’s my review on it.

Arthur Christmas shows Christmas in a new light, they show it as more of a mission with a large mother ship with elves dropping down delivering presents to each house rather than Santa flying around on his sleigh delivering presents to each house individually one at a time. Santa has become more of a figurehead than the actual brains behind the brains behind it all which is all down to Santa’s eldest son; but one year they miss one child and it is down to Arthur and Grand Santa to deliver the presents on time.

Many people hadn’t heard of Aardman Studios before so were a bit weary of how this film would turn out; me on the other hand I have watched things from Aardman since I was a little boy and they have consistently been phenomenal and this film is the same. The animation in this film is brilliant, it’s not quite as good as Pixar’s but it is definitely up there with some of the best looking animated films.

Now the voice acting, Aardman chose all British actors/actresses as the main voices; James McAvoy delivers a great performance as Arthur delivering brilliant timing which makes for some laugh out loud moments. Bill Nighy is brilliant as always playing the voice of Grand Santa, the funniest character in the whole film; I know some people don’t think voice acting is very hard or skilled but not anyone can do it as they have in this film.

Now there are a few flaws with this film, one being that by the middle of this film you will start to get a little tired of the continuous bad luck that delays their ever so straightforward journey, and it begins to go round in circles but you can forgive it for picking its self up and delivering a lighthearted Christmassy ending that will sure make any Scrooge love Christmas. The script is brilliantly written though with hilarious moments; the writers don’t write to make the kids laugh they write what will make everyone laugh.

This film is very British and it will get you in that Christmas spirit no matter what time of the year. This isn’t a kids movie, just because its animated doesn’t mean it can only be viewed by children aged fewer than ten, I guarantee that anyone of any age will enjoy this. Arthur Christmas has now been added to my yearly Christmas films to get me in the spirit and it should be in yours too. If you haven’t seen this yet and your thinking you will wait for Christmas to watch it, don’t, you must watch it now. If it wasn’t for the film dropping a little in the middle this would be near perfect but as a Christmas film it is one of the best.

‘Real Steel’ Movie Review

In the future where robot boxing has become the number one sport, a promoter (Hugh Jackman) fights his may to the top using a discarded robot all with the help of his eleven year old son (Dakota Goyo).

Let me say this right upfront, I really didn’t like this film very much and here is why. First off the bat, acting. Hugh Jackman plays his typical role of big man that doesn’t care about anyone else and he does it just as poorly as usual. The actor that plays the kid on the other hand, oh dear God he has to be the most annoying child in a film ever, his whole performance will drive you mental. Not only is he incredibly annoying he isn’t even very good, I really hope he isn’t on out screens for much longer he was piss poor.

When it comes to talking about the story of this film genius isn’t the first thing that pops to your head. I felt while watching this film the first thing they thought of was robots fighting and then attempted to build a storyline around that. To be honest I would have much preferred it if they just didn’t bother with this half assed story and just showed continuous robot fights, at least that way we wouldn’t have to see any of the chords awful acting. But this is the typical underdog story where everyone watching knows what is going to happen, there is no denying that it feels like it has all been done before.

I personally would not recommend this to anyone besides a 9 year-old child and even they would get bored halfway through. This is not one to buy or rent, but if it is on television and there is nothing else on you could maybe consider watching it.

New Still From Oliver Stones ‘Savages’

A new image for Oliver Stone’s upcoming film Savages has been released online. Savages is focused on “Pot growers Ben and Chon face off against the Mexican drug cartel who kidnapped their shared girlfriend.” (Courtesy of IMDB) It stars Blake Lively, Benicio Del Toro, Uma Thurman and John Travolta. I will have to wait for a trailer for my opinion on this one but its Oliver Stone so I’m sure it will be great. Savages is released on 28th September 2012 (UK+USA) You can check out the image below.
